Little Village X GRC

Little Village was set up by local mums who wanted to give away their good quality baby kit to other local families in need, but had no means to do so. Since April 2016, they have helped over 100 vulnerable families in Wandsworth by providing them with lovely clothes, toys and equipment. In their first three months alone they collected more than half a tonne of clothes, worked with 15 local organizations, and built up a pool of 60+ volunteers and nearly 700 supporters.

GRC X Age UK Partnership

Age UK Hammersmith and Fulham run a weekly upcycling workshop aimed at economically inactive older men who live in the borough. During the workshops they repair, sand & paint or varnish small items of furniture that have been donated to the project. The workshop provides an opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and to develop beautiful pieces of furniture to sell in the Age UK charity shop.

Air Pollution Fast Facts

2 Key Pollutants:

  • Fine particulates known as PM2.5s (dust, dirt, smoke, soot, etc.)
  • Toxic gas nitrogen dioxide (NO2)

What are the Health Implications?
The sum of nitric oxide (NO) and NO2 is commonly called nitrogen oxides or NOx.
NOx reacts with moisture, ammonia & other compounds to form small particles. These small particles penetrate deeply into sensitive parts of the lungs and can cause or worsen repiratory disease, and can aggravate existing heart disease, leading to increased hospital admissions and premature death.

What are the Environmental Implications?

  • Ground-Level Ozone (Smog) is formed when NOx and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) react in the presence of heat and sunlight.
  • Acid Rain, NOx and sulfur dioxide react with other substances in the air to form acids, which fall to earth as rain, fog, snow or dry particles.

What’s Being Done Today?
Read the “Mayor’s Air Quality Strategy” here. Specific points include:

  • Extra Hybrid Buses (600 Over The Next 3 years)
  • New Euro Standard 6 Buses
  • Measures to Clean Up Construction Sites
  • Apps such as The City Air App & Place I Live determine alternative walking/running routes to avoid pollution.
